Dalmore Oculus sells at auction for £23,000
The Dalmore Oculus described as "One of the most precious whiskies ever to appear at auction" has sold at Bonhams auction house in Edinburgh for £23,000.
The Oculus was created by the award winning master-blender Richard Patterson. Richard crafted the blend using whisky from 1878, 1922, 1926, 1939, and 1951 with the oldest whisky in the blend being from 1868 - distilled an incredible 140 years ago.
The approximate sales value for the Oculus was from £15,000 to £20,000 but the final sales figure has exceeded all expectations.
The final selling price of the Oculus does not quite beat the record paid for a whisky. The current most expensive whisky in the world is another Dalmore, a 62 year old, bought in 2005 for a staggering £32,000.
The official tasting note from Bonhams -
Beginning with a rich spicy and orange zest core from cask 1781 (distilled in 1951), trace elements of the taste and smell of dried fruits, ripe bananas, treacle toffee and almonds from an original fifty year old are added to develop complexity. Alongside these elements, rare malts selected from vintages distilled in 1868, 1878, 1922, 1926 and 1939 add a depth of flavour. Finally, to intensify the whisky, an incredibly intense oak, spice and bitter dark chocolate long matured distillate from cask 1782 is added to the mix alongside the whisky's 'capstone': a judicious amount of the revered 64 year old, proffering notes of coffee, aromatic spices and citrus zest.
