The spirit is back in Annan

It's good to hear another distillery will be coming back in to operation.

The distillery in question will be the Annandale distillery which last operated in 1919 and has been used as farm buildings for the last 90 years.

Plans have now been approved to turn it in to a fully operational distillery once again and as well as the distillery there will be a visitor centre, shop and café restaurant. Also planned is a whisky academy, where ‘students' will learn about the creation of Annandale whisky.

The project is expected to cost around £4 million and is expected to create 18 jobs.

The Scottish Whisky Association has said that it would be a "very welcome addition" to the Scotch whisky industry.

The first spirit available for sampling is expected to in 2014.

A quick history lesson

Annandale was established in 1830 by George Donald, a former excise officer.

The distillery was leased in 1883 to John Gardiner, a son of a former mayor of Liverpool, who also brought steam power to the distillery, replacing the old waterwheel power source, and made other great improvements such as the building of a new brick chimney, new kiln and malting floors (all of which still stand today).

Alfred Barnard visited the distillery in  and it features in his book Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom.

John Walker and Sons took control in 1886 (and was to be last owner of the distillery) after they found malt whisky was of good quality and they used it in their Johnnie Walker blend.
