The distillery was founded near Uig on the Isle of Lewis by a local businessman called Mark Tayburn. Abhainn Dearg means Red River in Gaelic. The distillery is designed as a green distillery with its main source of power coming from environmentally power lines and a planned hydroelectric power source planned for the future. The first expressions of single malt are said to be ready by 2011.
