Auchroisk is Gaelic for "ford across the red stream". Next to the distilleries location can be found the Dorie's Well. Extensive testing was done on the wells water by IDV and in 1972, after concluding that it was of exceptional quality, they founded the distillery on a nearby site. The objective of IDV was to use the Auchroisk spirit for the popular J & B Rare blended whisky, but the high quality of spirit induced IDV to release a single malt by the name of "The Singleton". The name was abandoned in 2001 and launched as Auchroisk in the Flora & Fauna series.
