One cannot say Banff distillery has had a dull history. It has witnessed many a fire, explosion or bombing which in an unlikely way has contributed to its fame. Situated at Inverboyndie, a few miles from Banff, the distillery was built by James Simpson in 1863 on the site of the original Banff distillery, which had outgrown itself. A severe fire broke out in 1877, which devastated most of the distillery apart from a warehouse and the maltings and a still exploded in 1959 which destroyed the still house and many of the surrounding buildings. But the most spectacular incident happened in 1941 when a German Junker plane bombed warehouse no.12 spilling thousand of litres of whisky into the Boyndie Burn and sending cask shooting into the air. The cows in the nearby fields missed a day of milking because they could not get to their feet! Banff distillery was finally demolished in 1985 by Scottish Malt Distillers (SMD) the owners since 1932. The eventful history of Banff has not overshadowed its whisky though as it is of good quality and highly appreciated. Only one expression has been officially released, a 21 year old in Diageo's Rare Malts series. A lot more expressions can be found through Independents.
