In 1881, William and James Greenless built the distillery in a remote cove at the confluence of the River Margadale with the Sound of Islay. This was the perfect site as it had plentiful supplies of peat and clear water. Local stone was used for the distillery buildings. The water used for the distillery rises through limestone and is piped to it, and because of this no peat is collected on the way. The stills are large and onion shaped. Bunnahabhain is the most lightly peated of all the Islay malts with a delicate flavour. The distillery also offers accommodation, where visitors can rent a cottage and lap up the scenery and atmosphere.
