Caledonian was once the largest distillery in Europe. It was established in 1855 in Edinburgh's Haymarket and was a looming figure there for nearly 150 years. Its purchase by DCL in 1884 had put pressure on Grain production and the blending market and a group of blenders, led by Andrew Usher decided to establish their own grain distillery called North British, which allowed a secure supply of grain whisky for their blends. Caledonian was finally closed in 1988 and has since been demolished.
