Lowland > Littlemill

Littlemill distillery was founded in 1772 and started distilling in 1750. It is thought to be the oldest distillery in Scotland. It was licensed by Jane Macgregor in 1823, and thereby she was one of the first females in the business. Littlemill followed suit with the rest of the Lowland distilleries and ran triple distillation, until it abandoned in the 1930's. In 1996, the distilling equipment was dismantled and part of the distillery was demolished leaving the two towers and some buildings. There was hope for Littlemill in 2003 when Loch Lomond Distillery Company had plans to start up production again but they were finally abandoned. The rest of the buildings were demolished in 2005 apart from the two towers. The Dunlugas single malt, distilled in 1967, is probably one of the rarest bottlings in the world.
