The Oban distillery was founded in 1794 by three brothers, Hugh, John and James Stevenson. The Stevenson family also founded the town of Oban. In 1883, the distillery was acquired by Walter Higgin. In 1898 the distillery was taken over by Oban & Aultmore-Glenlivet Ltd. John Dewar & Sons became the owners in 1923. In 1930, the Dewar's group was incorporated in SMD which is nowadays part of United Distillers & Vintners. The distillery has seen periods of silence when it was mothballed from 1931 to 1937, during World War II and again in 1969 until 1972 whilst a new still house was being built. A large part of the production from the Oban distillery is used in blends such as Bell's. Oban single malt found fame worldwide when UDV included it in their extremely popular Classic Malts Collection. Oban malt whisky is very highly rated by whisky connoisseurs.
