The distillery started life in 1891 as the Glenisla-Glenlivet distillery. It was converted from an old grain mill. The name changed to Strathmill in 1895 after the gin company W. & A. Gilbey acquired it. W. & A. Gilbey sold it as a single malt as early as 1909, although it was only 5 years old. It did not last long on the market as Strathmill's role was to be used in blended whisky. Strathmill under went a modernization in the late sixties where the stills were increased from 2 to 4 and a purifier was installed, Strathmill is one of the few distilleries using this. It is mounted between the lyne arm and the condensers and its purpose is to contribute more fruity notes to the whisky. Diageo has released only one official bottling on the market a 12 year old in the Flora & Fauna series.
