Independent Bottlers

An Independent Bottler is a company, which does not produce whisky but bottles whisky under its own brand name.

Independent bottlers can trace their roots back to the 18^th and 19^th century when many grocers and wine merchants decided to stock whisky, which came from legal distilleries and illegal stills. The demand was high for the spirit and many found that it was more profitable to close the grocery side of their businesses and only concentrate on selling whisky. Some merchants ventured into blending whisky, which resulted in smoother flavours. Some were so successful that their blended whiskies still dominate the market today, for instance a one John Walker.

The majority of independent bottlers are still family owned after hundreds of years, run by descendants of the original founders. Independent bottlers offer a very specialist range of whiskies. As the distilling and production side of the industry very much works in bulk selling, the independent bottlers can offer single cask, cask strength or whisky into the ages of 40 years old. Some independent bottlers have now moved into the realms of producers after purchasing a distillery, and now can offer the best of both worlds.
