Whisky Producers
Whisky producers are the lifeblood and soul of the whisky industry.
A whisky producer can be defined as a company that turns malted barley, water and yeast into an alcoholic spirit through the process of distillation. Whisky distilling has been practiced in Scotland for hundreds of years. Over the years the producers of whisky have changed. Whisky producers of the past were illicit distillers and small capacity legal distillers with many built by whisky merchants and blenders.
The present day has seen the rise of large multinational corporations producing whisky with Diageo being the largest, owning 25 per cent of the production capacity of the industry. Many of the small independent producers that were established in the 18th and 19th century still exist to this date.
The last family owned and completely independent whisky producer is Springbank. The distillery has been in the control of the Mitchell family for the last hundred years.
