Established in 1895 by James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail in the same premises it occupies in Elgin today. The original business combined groceries with wines and spirits, but with a strong leaning towards whisky. James Gordon had served an apprenticeship as a blender and brought with him a very successful whisky brokering business. Gordon and MacPhail began exporting their whiskies abroad in 1914. John Urquhart joined the firm in its first year of trading. His job was to assist with whisky and wholesale side of business. Today the Urquharts still own and run the company and have developed it from a small local business to having a global status.
